SUBSCRIPTION LICENSING

Paying via a subscription (sometimes referred to as term-based licensing) is an increasingly popular model for purchasing a software license. With a subscription, you pay to use the software for a defined term (anywhere from one to five years) with the right to renew at the end of the period. During the term of your subscription, you get SolarWinds 24/7 support and access to version upgrades.

The cost of the subscription is much less than the upfront cost of a perpetual license; however, at the expiration of the term, you no longer have the rights to use the software, and it will stop collecting data. Subscription licenses are typically purchased using operating expenses (OpEx), as opposed to the CapEx used for perpetual licenses. For organizations with limited CapEx, a subscription license may provide you the flexibility you need. There may also be some accounting or tax advantages to using OpEx. Again, consult with your financial organization to determine what’s best for you.

  • You have rights to use the software during the subscription term
  • Maintenance and support included during life of term
  • Typically purchased with OpEx

What products are offered through a subscription licensing model?

SolarWinds offers a number of on-premises and SaaS network, systems, database, security, IT service, and applications monitoring and management tools through a subscription model. See the table below for a list.

PERPETUAL LICENSING

By purchasing a perpetual license to SolarWinds® software, you have the rights to use the software indefinitely. This requires an upfront fee and includes SolarWinds 24/7 support and access to version upgrades during the first year. After the end of the first year, you have the option to purchase yearly ongoing maintenance and support for an additional fee.

Perpetual licenses are typically purchased using capital expenditures (CapEx) and depreciated over some length of time (such as three to five years). There are both advantages and disadvantages to using CapEx, and you should consult with your financial organization to determine what’s best for your needs.

  • You retain a license to use the software indefinitely
  • First-year maintenance and support included with option to renew support after year 1
  • Typically purchased with CapEx

Let Us Help

Not sure which is right for you? Talk to your SolarWinds sales representative and let us provide you with details on the two options.

FAQ: Questions, meet answers.

  • What is the length of the subscription?

SolarWinds offers one-, three-, and five-year terms. Speak with your SolarWinds sales representative to determine the best option for your needs.

  • For the traditional SolarWinds on-premises products, are there monthly payment options?

No, we do not have a monthly option or term available. We only have annual subscription terms available, and those are billed upfront. If you purchase a three-year subscription, you will be billed for all three years upfront.

  • Can I only buy a subscription license?

Depending on the SolarWinds product, you may have the option of purchasing either a traditional perpetual license with first-year maintenance and support or a subscription license with included maintenance and support. Speak with your SolarWinds sales representative to determine the best option for your needs for the specific SolarWinds product.

  • What happens at the end of my subscription term?

The subscription license will automatically renew for another term. If you choose not to renew your subscription, the product will not continue to function outside of your subscription term.

  • I’m an existing customer, how does this affect me?

It has no impact on your existing licenses, you will continue to own them perpetually. If you decide to purchase additional solutions, you will have the option to purchase perpetually or with a subscription. You may mix both license types on the same installation. The decision is entirely up to you and should be based on the needs of your organization. You can learn more about SolarWinds commitment to meeting the needs of our customers here.
