Kiwi Syslog Daemon 8.3.2 BETA Released Print E-mail

Version 8.3.2 BETA of Kiwi Syslog Daemon features a number of notable enhancements, additions and fixes.

A new Database Logger provides performance improvements not possible in previous versions of Kiwi Syslog Daemon; by adding database logging to the Syslogd Task Engine (Syslogd_TaskEngine.exe). The new high performance database logger replaces the old database logging: LogToODBCDatabase Action; and Scripting function LogToODBCDatabase().

The new database logger features built in cache functionality, which means that database "inserts" are cached if the database is offline or unavailable. Cached database SQL statements are resumed once the database comes back online again. This mechanism ensures that no syslog messages are lost when logging to database, even if the database server is down for maintenance or there is a scheduled outage of some kind.

The LogToODBCDatabase action (GUI) has also been modified so that users build a DSN through Microsoft's OLEDB data-link wizard. Under previous versions, the DSN “build” feature utilized a custom ODBC/OLEDB dialog. This has been supplanted with the OLEDB data-link wizard.

“Purge database cache” has been added to the File Menu > Purge menu option. This allows manual “database cache cleaning” if required. (Automatic garbage collection for cached database information is provided; manual cache purging has been added nonetheless).

When an existing archive is converted into a scheduled task, the “Include sub-folders” setting in a new scheduled task has been changed to 'off' by default. Under previous versions, this setting was 'on' by default.

A bug with DNS server address changes not been applied correctly has been fixed. Under the previous versions, a DNS server address change was not effective until the service has been restarted.

A range handling bug introduced in version 8.3.1 BETA has been fixed. The bug appeared when specifying a “minutely” frequency in a new scheduled task. Under the previous version, this value was mistakenly limited to 24 (minutes). The correct maximum is (of course) '60' minutes.

A DBLoggerCacheClearRate registry setting has been added for advanced control of the database cache clear timing.

The “Create Tech-Support” menu item that appears in the Service Edition of Kiwi Syslog Daemon, has been moved to the File menu (to match the Standard Edition of Kiwi Syslog Daemon).

A general "file age" date range checking bug in the task scheduler (introduced in version 8.3.1 beta) has been fixed.

The Install/Uninstall Service menu items have been removed from the Manage menu. Service installation and start functions are now undertaken by the installer as part of the installation process. New to version 8.3.2 beta, is the ability to specify the Service Logon Name as well.

Network adapter summary information has been added to the “packet spoofing” options of the “Forward to another host” action. (This has been added in order to clarify adapter selection when the adapter description alone is not sufficient to uniquely describe an individual adapter).
