INFO: Getting started with Kiwi Syslog Daemon

Introduction

Kiwi Syslog Daemon is designed to be as easy to setup and configure as possible.

Kiwi Syslog Daemon is a passive listening application. It does not actively poll your network devices.

When installed and started, Kiwi Syslog Daemon simply binds to the specified port(s) on your system and listens for any syslog messages; and if enabled, SNMP traps.

To have Kiwi Syslog Daemon receive messages, you need to configure all your network devices to send their syslog information to the IP Address of the system that you have installed Kiwi Syslog Daemon on.

There is information on how to configure most common network devices in the application’s Help file or on the website, http://www.kiwisyslog.com/help/syslog/index.html, under the section titled “Configuring Syslog enabled devices”.

The Default Rule

The first time Kiwi Syslog Daemon is installed, it contains a single Rule.
This Rule does not have any filters defined, which means that every message that is received by Kiwi Syslog Daemon, will cause the actions defined within this Rule to fire.
There are two Actions defined within this default rule:

A Display action – which sends all messages to the display specified.

A Log to file Action – which writes all messages to the file specified. The default filename is called SyslogCatchAll.txt. This is located in the Logs directory.
