HOW TO: Install/Upgrade Kiwi CatTools

Please review the minimum operating system requirements before upgrading your production CatTools system.

Whilst a typical upgrade will take approximately 1 minute to perform, this does not count the time required to first backup your system or perform upgrade validation testing.
If the CatTools installation process detects an existing installation, the devices and scheduled activities data is imported into the new version automatically when CatTools is first run.

For CatTools versions prior to v3.3.1, it is highly recommended that you run CatTools in Application mode (i.e. Interactive mode; not Service mode) the first time after installing a new version in case a prompt is displayed regarding your upgrade.

From CatTools version v3.3.1, the program icons to run CatTools in Application mode (Interactive mode) and the CatTools Manager application have been removed.
Therefore, if CatTools has been installed as a Service, you will only be able to run as a service.
Also, if you install CatTools as an Application and wish to then run it as the Service version; you will need to uninstall the CatTools Application first, then reinstall again as the Service version.

Suggested steps for a trouble free installation:
  • Review the new version release notes within the What's New section on our website for CatTools.
  • Log in to your machine with an Administrator level account.
  • Disable any anti-virus software and close any non-essential applications.
  • If upgrading, stop the existing CatTools Application; or if installed as a Service, the Service/Manager Interface and the CatTools Service.
  • Ensure any custom device types and custom activities have been given unique ID numbers. For upgrades to v3.3.1 and later; ensure these ID numbers are in the range of 4000 - 4999.
  • Make a full backup your existing installation.
  • Install CatTools on your machine.
  • Start the new version (Note: versions prior to v3.3.1, start in Application mode the first time, then change to Service mode if required).
  • If upgrading, test that your upgrade completed successfully by running an activity using the 'Run Now' button in the Activities pane.
