HOW TO: Add an exception to the Windows Firewall

By default, when the Windows firewall is installed, it will block all inbound traffic. This can cause problems with applications such as Kiwi Syslog Daemon that need to be able to listen on specific ports for information.

To solve this issue, you will need to add an exception (or a number of exceptions) into the Windows Firewall configuration.

An example of how to do this is shown below:

  • Open the Windows Firewall from the Windows Control Panel

Windows Firewall

  • Select the "Exceptions" tab
  • Press the "Add Port" button
  • Specify a Name, Port number and choose the protocol

Windows Firewall Add Exception

Kiwi Syslog Daemon has the ability to also listen on TCP for syslog messages and UDP for SNMP traps.

If you have enabled either of these options from within Kiwi Syslog Daemon, then you will need to create exceptions for each of these as well i.e. if you are listening for SNMP traps, then you will need to create an exception that allows UDP port 162.
